Let’s dive straight into it. Also, save the pin for later.
How to Start Daily Journaling as a Beginner?
When I started journaling around the age of 17-18, I really wasn’t aware much about writing my boring thoughts on a piece of paper. All I did was ‘Brain drain’: Let everything out I had on my mind – My bad days, good days, my anger, embarrassment, everything.
And that’s the first rule of starting journaling- that there are no rules.
Yes, it’s true. You can start journaling anytime, anywhere, and with any thought of yours. All you need is a beautiful notebook, a pen, and some alone time.
“The best time to begin keeping a journal is whenever you decide to.”
-Hannah Hinchman
Journaling is a very personal process that allows you to create space for learning, growth, and transformation through your written thoughts. It’s your evolving space, so don’t be afraid to experiment with different approaches.
If you’re a little confused about how to really start a journal? Let me guide you step by step.
A Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners
1. The First step
The first step to start a daily journal is to buy a beautiful notebook and a pen. That’s it!
2. Step 2: Daily journal ritual
Find an isolated and quiet place in your home, like your room, or outside in Nature. Sit there every morning to do this ritual according to your time. It may be for 10 minutes or for 2minutes. It’s all up to you.

You can also set a timer to focus more on getting your thoughts down on paper. Remember to name this spot as your ‘Daily Journal Ritual’ place.
3. Step 3: Write intention(Your Why)
On the very first page, write your intention for daily journaling. For this, ask yourself a question: “Why do I want to start a journal”?
Perhaps you want to know some deep answers, or an inner sense of peace and happiness, or you want to feel enough, or you aim to improve your life by reprogramming your thought process. And if you are still blank about your intention, then don’t worry. Time will tell you.
For me personally, my why is – “Clarity of Life.”
This has helped me in figuring out the most important things in my life & prioritising them. You won’t believe your random words are powerful enough to sort out problems.
4. Step 4: What to write in a Journal?
Ready to start, but not sure how? What to write? There are a lot of options to figure out what to write in a journal. Here are a few different types of journaling ideas you can consider –

Stream of consciousness – Allowing your pen to flow with your thoughts naturally. Write down whatever is in your mind without stopping & judging. This is how I journal.
Problem solving – Jot down the things that are bothering you. Take time to brainstorm and consider the situation.
Affirmations -Journal is a great place to write affirmations when you’re just trying to shift your mindset for your betterment.
Gratitude journal – If you want to find fulfillment and attract peace & happiness in life, gratitude journaling is the best.
Setting goals – You may have some goals scattered in your mind. You need to consider what things & actions will be enough to get there.
Journaling prompts – For the time when you’re blank and you just need to write something, Journaling prompts are a great help. There are endless prompts out there on every topic.
Fitness journal – If you are a fitness enthusiast, you can try this journal to keep yourself on track.
Dear diary/Event journal – This is the first thing that comes to mind when we imagine a journal – Jotting down day-to-day events. It’s good to record our emotions.
Yes, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the number of things you could plan to write. And this is the point where this habit of journaling tests your patience.
I’d suggest minimizing the options in the beginning. Try the few that resonate with you. Start with whatever you want to write according to your mood of the day. Jot down the daily journaling prompts in the form of questions if you really don’t know what to write.
5. Step 5: Write freely and openly
Write down your sentiments deeply & freely while answering the prompt. Keep it simple and allow your pen to flow. Grab a cup of coffee while writing & stick to it.
6. Step 6: Reward yourself
Rewarding yourself is a useful way to form a new habit that sticks. Give yourself an approachable goal to fill a certain no. of pages or write a certain no. of days in a row. Be easy with the habit.
When you reach the goal, treat yourself.

My Personal Tips for Beginners Using These Prompts

Let go of perfectionism
Your writing doesn’t need to be shiny and grammatically perfect at all. Rather than focusing on creating a Shakespeare piece, focus on expressing your thoughts & emotions.
Don’t pressure yourself
Don’t overburden your little mind to write plenty of thoughts all at once. Choose one prompt a day or a few per week to avoid feeling overwhelmed.
Be Honest
There’s no right or wrong way to journal. Write what feels true to you. Permit yourself to express your emotions without any judgment.
Use Any Format
You can write in any format as you like – Full sentences, bullet points, poetry, or even doodle if that feels right.
Revisit Prompts
Return to the prompts over time to reflect on and see how your answers evolve.
Create a Routine
Journaling at the same time and at the same place each day helps to build a habit (e.g., morning coffee or before bed). Mornings are the best.
Don’t forget to save the pin

These prompts are designed to spark curiosity and make journaling a fun and meaningful practice for beginners. There is certainly no right or wrong way in journaling.
